Consumers with broken laptop screens will usually take their computer to an electronics repair store or replace the laptop altogether. A broken laptop screen still has a perfectly functioning machine underneath and with just a screwdriver and a manual you can replace the screen yourself and save. This task is much easier than it sounds and the job can be done in less than an hour with the proper set of instructions.

LCD screens are one of the most delicate parts of a laptop computer so they can easily break when placed under pressure or dropped. If your laptop screen has been dropped, you should perform a quick diagnostic to find out if anything else has been broken. Use the VGA port to connect to a monitor to determine if all the other components are working. If the rest of the computer works find, then it is time to start looking for a screen replacement.

However, if the external monitor does not work either, then the problem may not be the LCD. If the back screen shuts down after a few minutes of use, flickers, or does not turn on at all, then you may need to change the inverter. This small board supplies power to the backlight, which is far cheaper than replacing LCD screens. The motherboard circuitry could also cause problems if you see lines, gibberish, or one solid screen color.

When purchasing an LCD replacement, you will need to get the exact same model as your old screen. Take off the broken screen and look around the back for a label or manufacturing number. The code usually consists of a few letters, which is followed by a set of numbers. Some manufacturers use different screen varieties for the same laptop model, so the exact code will insure you get the proper replacement. For example any screen model that starts with the letters “LTN” is manufactured by Samsung.

Once you have the screen product number, you are ready to find a replacement screen. The most common place to look is at the notebook manufacturer, but you will likely have to pay the premium price. The cheapest option is to find a second-hand screen or search online. Many stores automatically assume that replacing the screen is part of the service when purchasing a new one from them, so you should specify that you will be doing the job yourself and just need a replacement screen.

You should have a decent level of experience with electronics and computers before trying to replace a LCD screen. It may be helpful to have a visual guide to show the exact steps needed to do the job. You should also learn about the exact computer you have, because the fittings for each laptop will vary due to the brand. Some laptops have their screen glued into the frame. In these cases, it may be simpler to replace the entire cover. However, if you have experience with disassembling computers, it may be a better choice to leave the task to a professional.
